Hunter knew by smell that he was handling a human youngling, and wondered what he was doing in the Armak. It wasn’t unusual to see humans, but it was rare enough, particularly one on its own.

“Come and sit here, and I’ll fetch you a drink. You look exhausted.” Hunter fussed about behind the bar, drawing a draught of Wolven beer from the keg and placing the frothing glass in front of his guest.

The boy smelt odd, as if there was something faintly rotting, and Hunter felt apprehensive without knowing why.

“Thank you so much,” the boy said politely, and stood up, took a step towards Hunter and put out his arms. The movement was so unexpected Hunter stood in his place and was shocked when the boy’s mouth came toward him as if in a kiss.

A few seconds passed and Hunter looked down in vague surprise at the human body on the ground by his feet. The boy had collapsed like an empty flour sack and lay lifeless by an overturned chair. Hunter shook his head, as if to clear it, and scratched his ear in puzzlement. Where had this human come from, and why was he dead? He felt sick and not quite in control of himself. He absently gave the body a kick, as if testing to see if it would rise up. The smell of rotting meat was even stronger now. He was uncertain what he should do, but one thing was evident, he couldn’t leave the body here to be discovered. He would get the blame, and they could lock him up while they figured out what had happened.
